Beth's discovery
Short story with quotes from "The Brain- is Wider than the Sky"
Most schoolgirls were concerned with what movie was recently being showcased in the theater, which clothes were in or out of style, and even which boys were considered cute or attractive. Most girls did not care about, or often think about, scientific aspects of the world, including Beth. Beth spent hours searching the Internet for new hairstyles, fashion statements, or even just adorable videos of cats: everything that Beth did was for her leisure, never for academics. Whenever Beth was forced to do something academic, not seeing the prevalence of the assignment, she would toss the paper to the side or con loose it within her school bag before she went home each day.
One day, however, Beth sat through a guest speaker’s program. The program, titled “The Brain is wider than the Sky,” completely changed Beth’s views on the world. Beth began to see how the brain was wider than the sky; “one the other will contain with ease- and you- beside.” Beth saw that even though there were expanses of sky much greater than she herself could fathom, the brain had the ability to contain and understand how the sky worked and what it was. Beth discovered that “The brain is deeper than the see- one the other will absorb,” but the other is just a vast expanse of nothingness.
After the guest speaker left and Beth went home, she could not help but reflect on what she had, for the first time in her life, learned. She began to understand the boundless limits of her intellect; even though she may not be the best at school, her brain was vast enough to grasp and craft various aspects of her world. With a little hard work and some time, Beth began to academically achieve and was able to set goals. The brain, after all, “is just the weight of God,” with a little bit of time and effort, one’s brain can be manipulated into doing anything one could possibly fathom.
